I like to take my guineau pigs out to the yard to eat grass. they love it, but is grass healthy for cavies?

the grass is neither fertilized nor treated with pesticide. i keep them away from mud, rotting wood, sharp twigs etc. i try to pull weeds or flowers or non grass plants so they only feast on grass. mostly they just like to sit in their "pigloos" and eat. i feed them healthy food usually (timothy hay, dehydrated alfalfa pellets, lettuce, and a host of fresh vegetables), but how does grass stack up? empty calories, or a nutritous snack?

Grass is GREAT for them. Buying a rabbit run was one of my best investments. It is 5 by 6 ft- they run around in it, eat grass, and are HAPPY! Also, grass is VERY good for them. Loads of fibre, and is perfectly natural (they would eat it in the wild). An hour in the grass with a run is great exercise and fun.

Charlotte!
Reply:the real risk is herbicides and pesticides as well as air born pollutants from the factory down the road. you can also tell what effect it has by their bathroom habits after a day in the yard.better safe than sorry besides you can't see everything that's growing
Reply:I have a guinea pig there awesome. She likes grass so I let her eat it. The way she eats carrots and other vegies I wouldn't really worry too much about how healthy it is.

P.S.

Try giving yours a paper bag, it's hilarious watching them play in it.
Reply:I am not sure about guinea pigs but I do know that in the wild most small furry guys eat grass naturally. I am assuming they are no different.

Grass is great to help in their digestion and a great source of fiber.

Go ahead and let them have it!
Reply:Grass is just ok for them to eat as long as it doesn't have pesticide, and if it is not contaminated with animal urine. if it eats the part of the grass with the urine, it will die and im not exhaderating
Reply:nutrios snack for sure.
Reply:nutrients in grass are a little more than lettuce at best, but good for fiber, have you fed them clover? that has seemed to be a fave with the pigs I used to keep, that and strawberry leaves.
