How come my cats prefer to drink week old water from a vase of flowers?

than the fresh water in their bowl? Do they do it just to annoy me?

How come my cats prefer to drink week old water from a vase of flowers?
Yes, because they are cats. Everything they do, they do to annoy.

I noticed that my cat doesn't like to drink water from the bowl that's right beside her food dish. She used to drink out the toilet bowl (YUCK!), the shower and the fish tank, until I started putting old mugs full of water in random spots around the house (in the stairwell, in the bedroom, etc). She still drinks out of the fish tank, and the shower, but now she also drinks the fresh water out the mugs. I think the random mugs of water help her to feel more feral and prowly.

We stopped her from drinking out of the toilet bowl by keeping the lid down at all times.
Reply:I don't know what it's called exactly, but there's stuff in the week old water that your cats like. They are smart animals and wouldn't drink/eat things that don't taste/smell good to them.
Reply:all the dissolved gases in the water have risen out
Reply:My cats like to drink out of the toilet. Maybe it is that special flavor. No they dont just do it to annoy you although at times it seems that way.
Reply:My cat used to drink out of the fish tank and my Mum's cat only drank water dripping out of the cold tap - what fusspots!!
Reply:I have one of those tranquility fountains and all 3 of them would rather drink from that than the fresh stuff.
Reply:My cat won't drink from her bowl, she jumps on the counter and drinks from the sink (as I turn it to a low stream so she can drink it).
Reply:because they are mad like ours.
Reply:The foul smelling chlorine has evaporated. Cats noses are so much more sensitive than ours and they hate chlorine.
Reply:my cat perfers the toilet bowl. *sighs*
Reply:i agree they are just arrogent animals, everytime i put water in my cat bowl he keeps chucking the bowl over, i even tried him with milk because i was worried that he hadn't drank in days, the first few days he was fine then started chucking it out again so i gave up, i think if hes thirsty he'll drink it eventually...
Reply:Maybe the flowers give the water a special taste they like. You know, like some people like a lemon wedge with their water at a restaurant.
Reply:Mine wouldn't drink out of her dish either. My vet said to add a little milk to it and WOW she started drinking her water. But she stilled liked my waterfall to drink from. So I started adding a teaspoon of milk to it and she loved it.

If you plan on having flowers with stale water in it all the time then she will get sick from it. When she starts drinking spray her with water and she will get the message. But try the milk and see if she starts leaving your vases alone...
Reply:It took me forever to figure out why one of my cats would prefer to drink from the toilet than drink the fresh water in his bowl but I finally got it. He didn't like the taste of plastic.

I bought him his own glasses in a cobalt blue and set them around the house in out of the way places. He was delighted and never drank out of the toilet again.

Now that he's dead, these glasses are precious to me.
Reply:i dont think cats really care unless they are spoiled ~ they're just thirsty ~ wild cats drink yuckie stuff lol
Reply:Nah, the water in the vase probably smells fishy to them, and they like that!

Tasty week-old water - yum-O!

LOL
Reply:I don't know why they do it, but you must not let them do it, because many plants and flowers are toxic to cats, plus the week-old water in the vase with the flower stems dvelops bacteria.
Reply:you should probably be changing the water in the vase at least once a week.. thats gross. Just FYI the water could be contaminated with samonella.
Reply:The water straight from the tap tastes chlorinated to them. Water left standing dechlorinates.

My cat would rather drink a puddle than fresh tap water.

When it is summer, we save the dishwasher water (no chemicals) for use on the garden and I have even caught him sipping at that.
Reply:some cats dont like the taste of chlorine, my cat wont drink tap water only puddle water
Reply:don know

cause their brains r only 4 ounces heavy
Reply:Because they're naughty !

(actually, that explains almost everything our cats do in a given day, besides sleeping)
Reply:the same reason my dog will eat ANYTHING (slugs, poop, mud) except his expensive dog food! stubborn! they think that there's something better out there that we're keeping them from.
Reply:They have brains the size of a peanut. They do weird stuff.
Reply:No, no, no! Blonns and floons!
Reply:The flowers have given it flavor... what else can I say?

IT's True... lol

Aren't cats just so precious... and entertaining.

I have a litter of 4 that moved into my garage on me after something happened to their mom.. they were so tiny...

Enjoy Your Cats Life... Memories are being made...

GOOD LUCK
Reply:Cat's prefere to drink any old dirty water apparently it's good for them, Our cat's drink rain water from a dish we leave outside? Plus fresh water as well, and they live to ripe old age's,i.e. 23, 17, and 8 yrs old. Let them drink it.
