I'm 27 weeks pregnant 28 tomorrow.
On mother's day, a client of mine got me a flower lei. (necklace made of fresh flowers). I wore it for an hour and my co-worker told me to take it off because it's a supertition not to wear a lei when your pregnant or else your baby will choke on its umbilical cord and also necklaces.. something that goes around your neck . I'm the most supertitious person in the world and now I'm worried. Am i just being paranoid??
Umbilical cord tied around the neck? How often does it occur?
All those old wives tales aren't true. Apparently my son was born with his umbilical cord around his neck and i didn't even know it until my husband told my a few days later. The doctor failed to mention it to me, which was probably a blessing in disguise because everyone knows i would have flipped out. But yes you are being paranoid and if it was to happen and it was seriouse they would be able to tell by your babies activities and heart rate.
Reply:yeah i wouldnt worry im kind of superstitous too but i dont believe that, and yeah even if the umbilical cord gets wrapped around the baby neck the doctor may have some type of suggestion. NOW if you stretch your arms up in the air like you're reaching for something that may get the umbilical cord to wrap around the babys neck.
Reply:25% of all babies are born with the cord around the neck (it's not tied, just wrapped). It is very rare to have complications from such, as the doctor or midwife would just unwrap it before the baby finished descending. In the case of an unusually short cord, then the doc would clamp and cut before you finished delivering. I had two children born with that, and they are fine.
Secondly, how in the world would a necklace affect a baby inside your uterus? That's just nonsense (in the immortal words of Archibald the asparagus) FWIW, I don't wear necklaces at all, and two kids had it, five kids have not.
Reply:That is a very silliy superstition. Every pregnant woman has probably worn a necklace while pregnant, and while many babies do get their cord wrapped around them or tied in some form of knot, it is VERYVERY rarely fatal. Only something like 5% of births have complications due to the cord, and when it happens, they usually simply untangle to cord or deliver tha baby via c-section. Stop worrying and DEFINITELY stop listening to old wives' tales, especially when it comes to pregnancy.
Reply:It's not exactly a common occurrence, but not to worry. Even if the cord does wrap around the baby's neck, chances are things will turn out fine in the end. I'm living proof of that. I came out blue as can be, cord wrapped around my neck multiple times, and here I am today, carrying my own baby.
I wouldn't worry. It's only a superstition. It's not a written fact and if it really was something to be concerned about, I'm sure thousands of people would be testing the correlation between wearing leis and necklaces versus how many women give birth to babies with cords wrapped around their necks.
Congrats on the pregnancy! I'm sure everything will be just fine!
